2016 Named Scholarship Recipients

 

Harriet "Ozzi" Mask Scholarship

At Stuart, Angela was a full IB Diploma Candidate while at the same time pursuing her love of theater and music and being an active community volunteer. She was involved with theater productions all four years at Stuart and was a member of the Stuart Wind Ensemble, Select Vocal Ensemble, and Raider Marching Band. Angela is an Education major at William and Mary and credits Stuart’s “amazing teachers” for inspiring her.

Norene Thomas Scholarship

Rodrigo excelled academically at Stuart while also working at an after-school job. According to Rodrigo, “I knew that my four years in high school would have a major impact on my future, so I made changes to my work effort and habits.” Teachers described him as “vibrant, intelligent and inquisitive.” Rodrigo played in the Stuart band for four years and was first chair for the saxophone section of Stuart’s wind ensemble. Rodrigo wrote, “I played on a beginner’s instrument yet made it to the top with my passion and effort.” Rodrigo attends William and Mary.

Svendsen Memorial Scholarship

Bemnet came to the US from Ethiopia when she was thirteen. She quickly advanced through her ESOL classes and by her junior year was taking several challenging IB courses. According to Bemnet, “To be an immigrant is to make use of the resources within one’s reach in order to achieve the American dream.” During her time at Stuart, she found time to participate in numerous community service programs. Bemnet plans to major in Biology and one day hopes to become a doctor and return to Ethiopia to help those who are suffering from HIV. Bemnet attends George Mason University.
